Frequently asked questions
What is a dedicated server?
With most low-cost web hosting plans, multiple users share the same physical server. This is adequate for most small websites or personal use, as traffic levels are low, and servers can easily cope with demand. With a dedicated server, you pay more to rent the entire server. This means that all of the server’s power is available for your websites and applications. As well as improved performance, a dedicated server offers higher levels of security and greater flexibility. You can configure root-level settings or install the OS of your choosing, which is impossible on a shared server.
What is an “unmanaged” plan?
Unmanaged plan is where full access of the server is given to you to manage it on your end. Customers are expected to configure the server according to their own configurations required and manage all aspect of the server operations including any technical troubleshooting. HostSG will not be involved in any of the server operations unless there is issues with the hardware or network level where only HostSG’s engineers have access to.
What is root access?
Root access is authorisation to execute any command and access any resource on a device – this is only possible with a dedicated server plan. All other plans share server resources with other users, so any changes at root level would impact other users who share your server. Root access is similar to having administrator access on a desktop PC. You can access any file, change any setting, or reinstall the OS. Without administrator access, you can use the software and save files, but you can’t change the top-level settings.
Why do I need a licence for Microsoft software?
Microsoft software is not open source. Microsoft changes a license fee to use its software, so it’s not possible to install a Microsoft OS
without paying for a user license. There are many open-source Linux-based operating systems available free of charge.
